summer Beautiful beaches are tucked in around the southern coastline of Albany and long, warm days allow you to be active in the beautiful natural environment. autumn As the leaves colour with the change of season, the coastal city of Albany is gearing up for fun and feasting and you’re invited! Taste Great Southern Festival brings visitors to the beautiful coast and rural surrounds of Albany to meet chefs, food authors and local artists and is a celebration of the quality regional produce. It is also a great time to pull on your boots for a walk along one of Albany’s many walk trails, a kayak up the Kalgan River, a shop in the boutiques and gift stores or a tour around the significant historic attractions.
winter The southern coast is rugged and stunning in winter with swell from the southern ocean breaking over granite and roaring onto open beaches. Sheltered from the wind and swell are many bays, tranquil and glassy. From late May until October visiting Humpback and Southern Right Whales migrate north spend time playing in King George Sound, close to the coastline. Get up close on a tour. Position yourself in front of a log fire for a hearty meal in one of Albany’s quality restaurants, pubs or cafes. Enjoy the exhibitions showing in local galleries and indulge in a beauty treatment. Discover the significant military history of the port at heritage sites in and around the city.
spring Wildflower lovers can base themselves in Albany to take in the spectacular unique displays that blossom around the coastal city. It is a great time to explore the region and discover the creativity that emerges at this time of the year on the Southern Art and Craft Trail and with the Sprung Writers Festival. Studio’s galleries and other community venues host varied exhibitions around the beautiful countryside. Give yourself time to visit the open farm gates and taste local produce along the way. Find traces of Western Australia’s first settlement through the city on foot. Sunny days will draw you to the glistening ocean to see the Whales off on their return south and give you a chance to drop a line or dip into the breakers for a surf.

Each season Albany delights in welcoming Humpback and Southern Right whales in abundance!
It is not an uncommon sight to see the whales frolicking close to shore and many visitors can experience and view these playful animals from many of the lookouts along the coastline. Local whale watching cruises provide excellent opportunities to experience these extraordinary and extremely curios animals up close and personal!
